8th Grade

Algebra Concepts This course will provide eighth grade students with the fundamental concepts of Algebra and the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Grade 8.  Topics include properties of real numbers, data analysis, operations with rational numbers, writing algebraic expressions, writing and solving algebraic equations and inequalities, percent, probability, relations and functions, slope of a line, writing and graphing linear equations, solving systems of equations, powers and roots and their connection to scientific notation and the Pythagorean Theorem, and two and three-dimensional geometry.  Basic mathematical skills and instruction on the use of the TI-84+ graphing calculator are infused throughout the course. Upon completion of this course, students will progress to Algebra 1 at Mountain Lakes High School.

Algebra 1B This course is designed to provide the foundation in critical thinking and algebraic reasoning that students will need for future math courses, the sciences, and everyday life situations while adhering to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for High School Algebra.  This course is the second year of the Algebra 1AB program. Topics include writing, solving, and graphing systems of equations and inequalities; exponents and exponential functions; radicals and their connection to geometry through applications of the Pythagorean Theorem; polynomials; factoring; use of square roots, completing the square and the quadratic formula to solve quadratics equations; and simplifying, multiplying, and dividing rational expressions.  TI-84+ graphing calculators will be used throughout the course. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be placed in Geometry Enriched at Mountain Lakes High School. Students who perform exceptionally well may be placed in Geometry Honors. Students who have not yet mastered the course content and did not reach the expectations standard of the Algebra 1 PARCC exam, will be placed in Algebra 1 in 9th grade.

Geometry Honors The objectives of this course are to develop logical thought processes in deductive reasoning and to improve the understanding and application of terminology, symbolism, and reasoning in mathematics. This course addresses the basic concepts of plane, solid, coordinate, and analytic geometry.   Algebra concepts are continuously integrated and reinforced while maintaining an emphasis on deductive proof and reasoning. Problems explored in this course involve intense analytical thought and require a strong algebraic background. Upon successful completion of this course, students will progress to Algebra 2 Honors at Mountain Lakes High School.  Students who struggle with the course content will be placed in either Geometry Honors or Geometry Enriched.
