Placement Process for 7th-8th Grade

As students progress into higher levels of Mathematics, it becomes apparent that some advance at a rate much more quickly than their peers.  We are committed to meeting the needs of these students, and as such, will provide these students with a two-year sequence of Algebra 1AB in 7th grade and Geometry Honors in 8th grade.  Algebra 1AB and Geometry Honors follow the same curricula as Algebra 1 and Geometry Honors at Mountain Lakes High School.  The rest of our student population will also build their mathematical knowledge at an accelerated rate, through a two-year sequence of Algebra 1A in 7th grade and Algebra 1B in 8th grade.

Placement decisions for the 7th-8th grade course of study in mathematics are determined using the following criteria:

  • Benchmark Assessments (6th Grade Quarterlies)
  • 6th Grade NJSLA-M Scores
  • Briarcliff Diagnostic Assessment of 7th Grade NJSLS

Please note that the 7th grade NJSLS are not explicitly taught in 6th Grade Math; however some of our students have already mastered these concepts.  These concepts are incorporated in Algebra 1A, but not Algebra 1AB. Therefore, we give an assessment of these standards to help determine which students are ready to move directly to Algebra 1AB and which students would be better served in Algebra 1A.
